Layering: The Collage Process

Catherine Elizabeth depicts her world in a bright and richly-detailed way, using hundreds of pieces of hand-cut newspaper.
Sketch

Photos inform the composition. A simple drawing dictates the form and shapes.

Explore

The hunt begins! Found colors and textures are discovered within pages and pages of newspaper.

Cut & Tear

Hundreds of pieces are cut and torn for various effects—this is where texture is born.

Arrange

Piece-by-piece, layers are intentionally placed without the use of paint or dyes. (Seriously!)

Bits of colorful newspaper are strewn around a work-in-progress collage on a clean white studio table. Catherine Elizabeth's hands hold a bit of newspaper in one hand and scissors in the other, diligently trimming pieces to add to the new collage.

Meet the Artist

Amidst the many changes 2020 threw at us all, Catherine Elizabeth rediscovered a long-loved artform: collaging. She fell in love all over again with the hunt for just the right colors amidst newspaper pages. Each work Catherine creates is a memory, a beloved place, meant to transport you, even momentarily, to one of her many happy places.

Catherine Elizabeth, a young white woman with short, neatly kept brown hair and a kind smile, stands near bright windows and soft black and white pillows in her studio space. She is wearing a summery green jumper with small buttons down the front.

Great gift idea for my friends who grew up in Bungalow homes.

Beautiful print! Perfect for any room.

It is gorgeous! It arrived in perfect condition and it is lovely. We have many photos from over the years with my kids in front of the building, and I love your newspaper art version. It makes me happy when I see it!

Catherine was very friendly and her cards were beautiful,

Catherine Elizabeth explained how she made the artwork---she must be so very meticulous in her selections, and it shows in her unique work! I love it!

Great quality item. Fun and unusual little piece of art. Exceeded my expectations.

Three of Catherine Elizabeth's Chicago Architecture collage prints are float-framed in white frames. The frames sit neatly in a row on a rustic kitchen shelf next to a green vine plant in a light grey pot. Below the shelf is a stack of white plates.
